The first thing you’ll probably notice when you see the front cover of Witness Point is the name Nathan Fillion across the top. If you go to the first page, you’ll see he’s listed as one of the creators of the comic—but not actually included in the official credits, as a writer, artist, or anything else. It’s unclear exactly how much of the creative input for this comic actually came from him. Regardless, though, it’s a really unique and engaging comic that would have drawn me in no matter whose name was on the cover.

Sheriff Carter “Kite” Calhoon, our narrator and protagonist, is dealing with a grisly murder—a fair bit grislier than things usually get in the small town of Baraboo, Wisconsin. Not that it’s a normal town by any stretch of the imagination. It’s home to a major circus and its cast during the off-season, so it’s not unusual to see clowns, tiger tamers, and other performers around the neighborhood. It’s also not unusual to see a group of high school kids acting as investigative reporters for the true crime podcast that functions as the town’s last remaining news source.

However, Baraboo also has a dark secret. It seems the former head of WitSec, the federal Witness Protection Program, chose this tiny town as a dumping ground for every criminal, lowlife, and mob guy in the Midwest. When they enter the program, they’re supposed to be relocated to remote places all around the country. Instead, they’re all sent to Baraboo. Should be fine as long as nobody finds out about it, though, right?

Well, word has leaked, and now there’s been a murder. What’s more, nobody in town knows whom to trust. Their friends, their colleagues, their significant others… How many of them came from WitSec? Even if they aren’t the ones who committed the murder, how many of the town’s respected citizens came from lives of crime and violence?

Now with the help of Deputy Marshal Priya Khabrani of WitSec Chicago, it’s up to Sheriff Kite to solve the murder and clean up the mess that it’s left in the town.

I’m fully on board for this comic. It’s unique and bizarre in all the best ways, with a colorful, neo-noir vibe that brings everything together. It’s hard not to read Sheriff Kite’s dialogue and narration in Nathan Fillion’s voice, which makes me wonder if the plan is to turn this into a movie, with him as the star. I’d totally go see it. I love the story, I love the world, and I can’t wait to see how things develop.
