With Imposter Comics’ debut, Dark Visions #1 hits the Portland indie comics scene with a story that bites back—quite literally.
Of all the panels I attended at Rose City Comic-Con 2026, I was most impressed with the Imposter Comics panel, where the independent publisher had their inaugural presentation, launching their company with a whopping three printed comics, each epitomizing their manifesto: “A boutique horror, sci-fi and dark drama press from Portland, Oregon.” And what better start to our morbid menagerie of stories than Dark Visions, a tale centered on Eric Bergman, a troubled man haunted by horrific visions when he’s unmedicated. As he continues to live his day-to-day life, he begins seeing a strange, pale man with sharp nails dressed in a suit, which means only one thing: misfortune awaits.
One thing Lewis excels at is his ability to tap into the mind of our main character, Eric, further entrenching the reader under the horrendous pall of anxiety looming over the entire issue. It feels as if we’re alongside the protagonist, becoming more and more unhinged as the story progresses, with naught to comfort us but the truth of our intentions. But the true horror lies in knowing—without a shadow of a doubt—the evil that is to come, with nobody believing you. It’s enough to drive any man insane. Lewis captures the overthinking, apprehension, and difficulties our hero struggles with in one fell swoop of the pen, showcasing his innate storytelling talent.
When it comes to the art department, it’s evident there is no shortage of aptitude across the board at Imposter Comics. Bir lends his illustrative technique to the world of Dark Visions, encompassing its more dreadful nature by giving each page jagged, dynamic panel work and stark color contrasts. With angles alone, Bir demonstrates the depth of Eric’s loneliness and its impact on his psyche. Sharp corners of each panel jut out and into the reader’s mind, piercing it with the same hopelessness our protagonist feels and rendering you a thrall to each page turn.
Dark Visions #1 hooks you in with its sharp fangs and refuses to let go, creating a turbulent reading experience from start to finish.
