The Station Square hysteria continues in this jam-packed second issue of IDW’s highly anticipated crossover mini-series!
With Eggman in pursuit of Mechagodzilla for valuable information that could enhance his designs for world domination, it’s up to Sonic & Co. to put an end to his madness. But this task proves more difficult than most, with Mothra running loose within the city, endangering its citizens. For this mission, Sonic will have to enlist the help of a fan-favorite character (and perhaps an unexpected guest, as well)!
Marino is quickly inching his way into my list of comic writers to be on the lookout for, with his astonishing ability to capture the voice of each Sonic character so effortlessly. This is a man who has done his homework (and perhaps some extra credit) and treats this beloved franchise with the reverence and respect it deserves. Marino maintains an air of humor amidst the devastation, staying true to the series’ tone and injecting the comic with his own pinch of wittiness, making for a wildly enjoyable read.
This particular issue is rife with brilliant splashes and double-page spreads, effectively utilizing the real estate on each page and allowing room for our massive friends from Godzilla to stretch. Lawrence’s style naturally fits the Sonic universe, but I’m impressed by his line-art approach to the colossal threats in this series. Furthermore, Graham’s coloring adds a bright palette to the world, striking a lively balance between the two franchises. Dukeshire does a phenomenal job, as well, with his lettering, each SFX leaving an emphatic touch and elevating the reader’s immersion.
Sonic x Godzilla #2 races past its first checkpoint with flying colors, expanding upon the Station Square bedlam with spin dash focus and an atomic breath of fresh air.
