‘Fake Geek-Girl #1:’ Comic Book Review

Identity Thief successfully landed a blow on Geek-Girl, and they have nabbed her looks and memories! What does this supervillain want to do as former college co-ed Ruby Kaye, and what is the appeal of a small town in Maine anyway?

Fake Geek-Girl #1 features Identify Thief’s first foray into Acorn Ridge society with their new face. Ruby’s former friend and current non-super nemesis, Karin, heads for a night on the town with her latest companion, Alex, and schmoozes with many elite local residents. When Ruby shows up wanting to apologize, how will things go? More importantly, which Ruby Kaye is trying to make amends?

Karin’s inner thoughts about Geek-Girl and Ruby take center stage in Fake Geek-Girl #1, and while I wasn’t dying for more depth to the Acorn Ridge mean girl, there are some pointed exchanges that are worth the read. The final panels reveal which Ruby is apologizing and leads directly into Geek-Girl #12 and some of the challenges Maine’s superheroes will face with the new baddy. There’s also a concise explanation of the events that damaged Karin and Ruby’s friendship, which could make this issue a jumping-on point for new readers.

Long-time fans of Geek-Girl won’t find a lot of new material for the main story, but it’s a little detour in the lives of Acorn Ridge’s non-super-powered citizens. For all the GG completionists, this issue cannot be missed! It’s an interesting take on what someone could do if they were another person for a little while!

Fake Geek-Girl #1 follows Geek-Girl #11 and will be available for purchase at Geek Girl Comics.

A Kickstarter for additional issues will go live on February 28.
