The following is an interview with writer Chris Moses (CTRL+Z) regarding the upcoming release of the new sci-fi drama series, Synap, through Mad Cave Studios. In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Moses about his shared creative process in working with artist Andrea Giannini to bring the world and characters to life on the page, what draws him to working within the sci-fi genre, and more!

Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: Congratulations on the upcoming release of Synap! For those who may be unfamiliar, what can you share with us about the premise of this sci-fi drama?

Chris Moses: Thanks! Synap is a five-issue mini series following a family run private defense company called Synap as they put together the pieces of an ancient robot. It follows siblings Angeline and Shiloh as they try to pilot the machine while dealing with the consequences of giving your life to a project bigger than any one person.

BD: You are no stranger to the sci-fi genre, having worked on the series, CTRL+Z, which successfully funded through Kickstarter last year. What draws you to working within the genre, and what unique narrative tools do you feel that it provides to you?

CM: Sci-fi was the genre I first began writing in, with my comic, The Saturn Effect. It’s always been a genre that I’ve gravitated towards and have taken multiple classes on it as an undergrad at NYU. Sci-fi is amazing not only because we can show glimpses of an awesome future, but also hold up a mirror to what’s going on right now.

BD: How would you describe your shared creative process in working with artist Andrea Giannini to bring this larger-than-life story to life on the page?

CM: Immensely satisfying! Synap is a book that I’ve worked on for awhile, and Giannini is an irreplaceable part of bringing it to life. He’s awesome and has a bright future ahead of him in the industry!

BD: At Fanbase Press, our #StoriesMatter initiative endeavors to highlight the impact that stories can have on audiences of various mediums. How do you feel that this story may connect with and impact readers?

CM: I think we all can relate to the struggles that our two main protagonist feel. Angeline has given her youth to a project that she feels she is unable to continue, or that she’ll see finished. Shiloh, on the other hand, is just at the beginning of their journey, a teen dealing with the anxieties of what the future may bring while still figuring out who they are.

BD: What makes Made Cave Studios the perfect home for this series?

CM: Mad Cave is extremely supportive and has an amazing team behind the scenes that make everything smooth and easy. They are an invaluable part of the industry and always doing cool work with awesome creators!

BD: Are there any projects – past or current – that you would like to highlight for our readers?

CM: Definitely check out my books, CTRL+Z, I Summoned a Demon, and She’s Kinda My Type, and more! I am always running crowdfunding projects on Kickstarter.

BD: Lastly, what is the best way for our readers to find more information about Synap and your other work?

CM: For more info on Synap, keep an eye on the Mad Cave Studios website. If you want more work from me, follow me on Kickstarter, or Red Sea Comics on social media! You’ll always be able to find a new project coming from me on the platform if you want to support my work directly.
