“Creating Fandoms” is a monthly editorial series by the Fanbase Press staff that will focus on the comic books, graphic novels, and other creative endeavors produced by Fanbase Press. With a focus on the creators involved, behind-the-scenes revelations, and advanced previews of things to come, this featured series will be your ticket to a sneak peek at what’s being built inside the Fanbase.

Fanbase Press’ upcoming fantasy graphic novel, The Margins (co-written by David Accampo and Paul Montgomery, art by Amanda Donahue), explores the positive and negative effects of the creative process through a story about a comic creator opening a portal to a fantasy realm via their artistic work.  In the graphic novel, artist Charley Keo’s new gig begins as a fun challenge to breathe new life into the forgotten pulp world of Elad – this time as a comic book. But as tendrils of this lost realm creep into her sleepy Portland neighborhood, Charley realizes that Elad is much more than the lines on a day-dreamt map, more than the sum of an old hack’s prose. Elad has its hooks in Charley, and what was once fantasy has become deadly reality for both the artist and the woman she loves.

In the below video, artist Amanda Donahue shares her experiences working on The Margins, explains her working process for each page, and more.
