Love should never be a secret, but be wary, because it can also be deadly. And both these statements could not be truer in this explosive, colorful first issue of Yumi: 00EX.

Meet Yumi—a playful, intelligent (and somewhat violent) secret agent with a mission: do whatever it takes to find her missing MI6 boyfriend Richard. Throughout her journey to London and Paris, she disarms (quite literally) agents, blows up entire buildings, and wreaks havoc on a massive scale—all while doing it with pink, poppy style.

From the writer of Narco, Plastic, and I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer comes a volatile introduction to the spy world of underground assassins, but with a charming shot from Cupid’s arrow to keep the romance alive in a genre that isn’t typically known for this level of passion. Wagner decides to instead make this love affair a main focal point of the series, showcasing just how far our main character Yumi will go to be with the man she loves. It’s a cool-minted breath of fresh air and something I’m ecstatic to see since I’m all about changing it up.

Silva and Cvetkovic join forces to create an eccentric, quirky aesthetic, infusing every page with offbeat humor to entertain throughout all 32 pages. With a peppering of early 2000s memes thrown into the mix, it’s more than enough to knock an old-timer millennial like me back with a major blast from the past. I found myself pointing out a plethora of fun references to inspirational media over the years, adding to my overall enjoyment of this issue. The cherry on top is Lennertz’s coloring, opting for bright, flashy coloring to distinguish between each scene change and bringing life to a world not many people see with their own eyes.

From beginning to end, Yumi: 00EX #1 is an off-the-wall adventure abundant with action, adoration, and a whole lotta whimsy.
