Geeky Parent Guide

Geeky Parent Guide (159)

The Geeky Parent Guide is a semi-monthly editorial series by Fanbase Press Contributor (and father of two) Travis Lakata that will help parents and other caregivers to safely and positively navigate various avenues of pop culture with their children.

As you, your friends, and family get ready for the ultimate of days (Free Comic Book Day!), it can sometimes be overwhelming trying to take in the thousands of options that are available. Along with what you’ll find regularly in your local comic shop – new releases, back issues from previous years, graphic novels, and an assortment of toys and games – there are FCBD comic books that can be a gateway to following a series you haven’t previously explored.

With Free Comic Book Day around the corner, Titan Comics has two comic books available for attendees to check out. In a world of popular characters, Titan is bringing Doctor Who and Tank Girl to comic shops, and their timing is perfect.

Free Comic Book Day is upon us, and the comic book world has a seemingly endless supply of wonderful adventures and mysteries being told by so many people. Kymera Press has the distinction of being a publisher that creates its works from all female artists and writers, and they have a selection of comics that anyone can get into that span various genres.

When visiting your local comic book shop or perusing online, it’s sometimes difficult to get a handle on everything that’s available, especially on Free Comic Book Day. Alterna Comics is a one-stop shop for a wide variety of genres, whether you’re looking for print or digital format. Alterna successfully Kickstarted Amazing Age #0 to bring its fans a sense of satisfaction to the original five-issue series by creating something for select stores on FCBD.

Free Comic Book Day is a fantastic tradition in the world of geekdom. It is not only a great way to encourage new readers to visit their local comic book store, but there are also amazing sales on trade paperbacks, discounted collectibles, games, and toys that support local businesses. And, if you want to still enjoy the wonderful day after the shops close (or perhaps if you can’t make it to the shop that day), there are plenty of opportunities to find what you’re looking for online.

From Tomb Raider to Super Mario Bros. to Mortal Kombat, video games have been making their way onto the big screen for decades. As we speak, there’s a massive transformation in movie theaters worldwide. Rampage, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Naomie Harris, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, is an intense, action-packed film blended with clever humor and dramatic fight sequences.

The Geeky Parent Guide is celebrating its first anniversary this week. During the GPG’s first year, we’ve taken a look at many different geeky things – theme parks, board games, recommendations for summer viewing and holiday gifts, comic books, movies, and explorations of the International Space Station, Goddard Visitor Center, and NASA missions to Mars.

One of the best ways to occupy one’s time is to dive into a good story. The world around us goes quiet as we become lost in a fantastic world with intriguing characters. Books are not only a wonderful way to expand our imaginations, but they also lead to wonderful adaptations on the big screen. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter has seen the popular series turned into a beloved film franchise, while expanding into the world of theme parks and exhibits. Marvel’s cinematic universe has also propelled itself from the text and artwork of many different comic books to movies, TV shows, and more.

The International Space Station (ISS) isn’t just a dream from a wonderful science fiction movie. It is a reality that looks to extend humanity’s reach into space in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

As a parent, it’s important for our kids to learn a great many things. Hard work, self-reliance, and perseverance are great attributes, ones we want all of our kids to have. Hopefully, what the Geeky Parent Guide hopes to share today will shine a light on another attribute that might make them appreciate their own hard work even more – recognizing selfless dedication from others.
