The following is an interview with writer/artist Howie Noel (The Salesman, Float, Clew) regarding the recent Kickstarter campaign launch to collect Chester Gould’s classic Dick Tracy comic strips in collaboration with Clover Press and the Library of American Comics.  In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Noel about his experience in revisiting the strips (released between 1961-1964) for the collection, the incredible bonus features to be included, and more!

Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: As these deluxe editions will collect the strips released between 1961-1964, what has been your experience in revisiting these iconic stories and characters?

Howie Noel: It’s a world I’m always in. I keep the complete Dick Tracy collection by Clover Press right by my art desk at all times. I’m constantly using them for inspiration and reference. They’re such an invaluable asset to me as a fan and artist.

BD: As a life-long fan of the Dick Tracy strips – and a recent creator on the official Dick Tracy newspaper comic strip, why do you feel that these stories and characters continue to capture readers’ attention so many years later?

HN: As time has gone on, I think Dick Tracy appeals to so many as he’s a genuinely good man who is doing everything he can to fight crime and corruption in his city. He’s not an anti-hero. He’s not harboring some creepy secret. He’s a good person and that’s refreshing as we’ve gotten so many anti-heroes.

BD: What can you share with us about creative process in bringing your cover art for one of the collected editions to life on the page?

HN: I researched all the characters from the volume I was assigned and then went designing my cover. I knew I wanted to feature as many of the rogues as I could because I love them. And I wanted my artwork to work with the slipcase that comes with these editions. It was very important to me that Tracy was the focal point but also when the slipcase is off – you see this fun and moody scene underneath.

BD: In light of the Kickstarter campaign, are there any particular backer rewards that you would like to highlight for our readers?

HN: The cards and stickers are so fun. And the art prints! You can get a print of my cover as well which is so cool.

BD: Are there any other projects – past or current – that you would like to highlight for our readers?

HN: I’d love it if fellow Tracy fans could check out my new comic strip, Clew, which is on my website (hcnoel.com). Also my memoir, Float, which discusses dealing with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I always like to let others know they’re not alone.

BD: Lastly, what is the best way for readers to lend their support to the Dick Tracy Kickstarter campaign?

HN: Sharing the campaign and backing it is the best. You can easily go here and pick which reward level is best for you.
