That is one of the many fantastic quotes of the late, great tortured genius Marilyn Monroe.

Sadly, or amazingly – depending of how full your glass is, it is also one of her quotes I relate to the most. I was truly saddened by the tragic death of the blonde bombshell. Of course, she died long before I was born, but it was tragic nonetheless. My mother idolized Norma Jean and passed the torch on to me. (Blonde is as Blonde does!) When I was young, one of my bedroom walls was dedicated to Madonna, but the one I could see while laying in bed was dedicated to Marilyn.

This holiday season sees the release of My Week with Marilyn, based on the true story of a young filmmaker’s week spent with Marilyn during her time in England, making a movie with Sir Laurence Olivier. Michelle Williams plays Marilyn, and Kenneth Brannagh plays the temperamental Olivier.

What of Williams’ performance? She’s no Marilyn Monroe. Don’t get me wrong; she is fantastically mesmerizing in her performance and completely lights up the screen. What I mean is she is no Marilyn Monroe, because no one is. Marilyn is the greatest part the legend ever played. The confident sex kitten that could win over the entire world with seemingly little effort. “When Marilyn gets it right, you can’t take your eyes off her.” And, the same could be said of Michelle Williams’ portrayal. It will be interesting to see her duke it out with Meryl Streep, and her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher, at the Oscars.

A well done film with an emotional heart. No offense, Madonna, but I will always look first to my Marilyn wall for creative inspiration.

A staunch believer in Blonde Ambition, Michael hopes his new comic about shallow blonde super heroes in Los Angeles, The Blonde Squad, will set the world on fire (or at least brighten it a bit).
