RECAP AND SPOILERS BELOW
In Episode 1, we meet soon-to-be-murdered singer/songwriter Gwyn Thompson on the night of a hometown concert (and the night before the release of her solo album, Dreamcrusher). Various people are ushered into the green room by Cassidy Sanders, Gwyn’s manager. Each visitor is a viable suspect for her impending murder: Jeff Anders, the ex-boyfriend; Dawson Peers, Try Not Records rep; Ruth Elliot, Gwyn’s high school music teacher; and Jill Cooper, ex-bandmate. All of these visits leave her emotions scattered, and it becomes clear Gwyn is a haunted character with lots of secrets.
Episode 2 introduces Detectives Westerburg and Menedez who are investigating Gwyn’s murder. They bring in the suspects one by one, and they all have their own secrets and possible motives. Gwyn wasn’t entirely happy with her record label, her ex Jeff was drinking backstage and may not have been truthful about when he left the venue, Jill allegedly dropped her backstage pass and didn’t see Gwyn after the show, and Miss Elliot wrote a book that focuses on Gwyn. We also meet a new suspect: stalker Reginald “Reggie” Myers. On a personal note, Detective Westerburg quickly became my favorite character due to this episode.
The behind-the-scenes making of the video for Gwyn’s new single, “I Beat U 2 It,” is the backdrop for Episode 3, a few weeks before her murder. Ex-bandmate Jill has now listened to the new album and does not stop calling/texting Gwyn throughout the shoot: “We should talk” is her message for Gwyn. We also learn of friction between Gwyn and her label, especially with Dawson as they discuss the renegotiation of her contract. Gwyn’s invitation to Jeff to come to the concert is verified in this episode, as well. If this wasn’t enough, we start to see cracks in Gwyn’s “nice girl” personal for the first time. Is she who we thought she was?
Episode 4 is also unique in its presentation to viewers. It is entirely made up of an unaired episode of a documentary called We Always Knew! titled “Before the Wreckage.” It explores Gwyn’s past in music and her experiences with Red Wreckage, the band she was with before going solo. Gwyn was mentored by her high school music teacher Miss Elliot, and music finally clicked with her when she was tasked to sing Madonna’s “Material Girl” like a lounge singer. Her relationship with Jeff is explored in greater detail, and we meet Emily Coupe, the third member of the band besides Gwyn and Jill and yet another possible suspect. More secrets are revealed, more clues are dropped, and we hear all about the heart-breaking end of Jeff and Gwyn’s picturesque relationship.
Episode 5 takes viewers back to the investigation with Detectives Westerburg and Menedez interrogating suspects, watching backstage footage, and piecing some of the clues together. More motives become apparent, and we finally learn what many viewers had suspected: Gwyn may have plagiarized a couple of the songs on her new album. It is the most explosive episode to date, with fans crying out for more.
If you haven’t watched Dreamcrusher, there is still time to become an investigator, scour the internet for those clues, and try your hand at the $100,000 prize! Are you the one to solve Gwyn’s murder and finally get #justiceforGwyn? Episode 6 drops on Tuesday, May 27th, on Reveel.
