‘Black Badge #9:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Black Badge #8 was a body slam to the soul. The most unexpected thing that could have happened did, and it was far more upsetting than I could have imagined it would be. It sat with me for a couple weeks. Why? Because Black Badge is not lazy storytelling. That’s probably the best compliment I could give to a creative team.

Black Badge is about a group of elite boy scouts who are sent out by the government to do things that only kids could get away with. Would you believe that a child accidentally ended up on the northern side of Korea, or that they are there to help release a political prisoner?

Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins began this series as a sort of espionage, Mission Impossible serial, sending the boys on missions. This naturally veered into a clever mash up of YA brilliance, as our Black Badges were put up against other elite troupes at a scout jamboree. Amidst all of this hustle and bustle, there has been a growing thread that began with the question from the newest member of the badges: “What happened to the last guy?” Tugging on that one thread has unfurled the ball at an ever-quickening pace, and now Kindt has thrown our characters into a world of political paranoia and manipulation not unlike Mind MGMT.

On top of that, we’re now following the original members of the Black Badge in a truly intriguing storyline. How that will mesh with what’s happening now has me incredibly curious and anxious for the next issue.

Part of the joy of this experience has been not knowing where it’s going next and just allowing some of the best creators in comics today to take me along for the ride. It’s nice to just be able to sit back and trust that you know you’ll be getting something absolutely worthwhile from an experience.
