‘Cremisi #3:’ Advance Comic Book Review

The truth is in here.

With the third issue of Cremisi dropping soon, I’m beginning to see the scope of the project a little better.  The first two issues have functioned like a pilot, and now it seems that the creators are settling in to a Monster-of-the-Week format, while still unspooling some of the big mysteries that we’ve already been exposed to.  Luckily, the characters are not only strong and interesting enough to carry this type of episodic format, but they make it incredibly fun to read.

Isaac Fox has found a wonderful mix between Firefly, Cowboy Bebop, and The X-Files.  This is a surprisingly accessible tale of a lone space explorer getting in over his head and dealing with danger in an over-the-top way. If we get to enjoy it episodically, I’m all for it.  The challenge of it will always be finding storylines that showcase other facets of the personalities without straying too far from the core of the experience, but from what I see so far, I think Fox and team have a tight handle on these characters and what they’re capable of.

Sayako Rush’s artwork still blows me away. The manga sensibility works well and describes the tone for us throughout the book.  The stark black-and-white coloring accentuates the tension, and the red highlighting on certain elements helps us find those elements almost like a touchstone.  I really love the character designs. Though the body images are admittedly unnatural, they are fun and certainly pleasant to look at.  This is a comic that supports its mature rating.

I’ve been digging the series thus far, and if you liked the initial two episodes, you should definitely head to Kickstarter and help them bring this third episode to the stands.  It’s a good mix of style, wit, and solid writing that engages the reader in a fun and mesmerizing way.
