Not that you would need talk out loud while reading a comic book by yourself, but issue #28 of Harrow County stunned me into silence. An inner silence, I guess. Everything disappeared from my mind as Emmy faced off with Kami. Would Emmy take that step to becoming a monster like she’s been on the verge of doing – like her mother did – or would she make a better choice?
Issue #28 wraps up the current story arc that has brought Emmy’s evil sister Kami back from the dead to wreak havoc on Harrow County. Over the last couple of issues, a lot has been lost, and at this point, it’s difficult to see how we, along with Emmy, can climb our way out of the darkness that’s descended, especially since things are about to get worse.
Whenever I think Harrow County has reached its apex, it continues to crescendo in surprising and horrible ways. Cullen Bunn continues to navigate breathtakingly complex mythologies of his own creation while making them emotionally potent on a personal level. There are no tropes, there are no clichés; this Southern Gothic love letter is one of the most original and affecting stories I’ve ever read in years.
Tyler Crook’s art both horrified me and brought me to tears. He moves from nightmare-inducing to heartbreaking seamlessly and sometimes in the matter of two panels. I want to take every page from every issue of this book and frame it on my wall. His work is lush with life and emotions.
Synchronicity between creators like this happens once a decade. I don’t know why you’re not reading Harrow County, if you haven’t started. I don’t know what would keep you away or make you second guess the decision to do so. The only thing I can surmise is that you don’t like amazing stories and would rather settle for second best. Stop settling for mediocrity and read Harrow County.
