Listen up, Tomb Raider fans! We have less than a month before Rise of the Tomb Raider – a video game originally released for the Xbox One platform – will be available for PlayStation 4 on October 11th.
In the meantime, us Crofties (I new term I coined for any fan of Lara Croft) at least have Dark Horse Comics’ ongoing Tomb Raider comic book series to help keep our eyes unglued from the PlayStation store in hopes that the DLC version might arrive early. It won’t. I already checked.
But alas, here we are with Tomb Raider #8 after last month’s issue took the plot in a completely different direction from its predecessors. Before last month, we followed Lara on an adventure to save her friend, Professor Demur, from the Knighthood of the Dark Spore (True name; no joke!) after he discovered the secrets of a specific type of mushroom the Knighthood had sworn to protect. But when the Professor used the very same mushrooms to take his own life, Lara needed some time to herself. But just when one friend leaves, another finds her way back into Lara’s life…
Which brings us to this month’s issue where Lara is in search of her friend, Sam. Sam was last seen at a mental institution, but when Lara goes to investigate, she becomes the patient and is tortured by a mysterious, evil doctor after he assumes she helped Sam escape. Now that she knows where Sam isn’t, it’s Lara’s turn to escape. But with the doctor and his Trinity henchmen shooting at Lara’s every move, it’s easy to see why Sam may have wanted to get out of there in the first place.
As always, I truly admire the storyline in this series as laid out by script writer Mariko Tamaki. Her dedication to these characters not only describes their actions, but I can honestly feel the pain and depth of Lara especially, as if she were a friend of my own. I feel close to Lara, and I believe those are Tamaki’s exact intentions. And with artwork and colors by Phillip Sevy and Michael Atiyeh, respectively, this series can only get better each month.
For now, however, I wait with the utmost anticipation for Lara’s newest adventure on my PS4.
Until next month,
