It’s always a good comic week when a new issue in the Hellboy universe arrives on the stands. Last week saw the release of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. The Ghost Ships of Labrador from Mike Mignola and Rob Williams with art from Laurence Campbell.
Hellboy and Abe Sapien are on a mission to discover the whereabouts of missing B.P.R.D. colleague Agatha Blunt, an exorcist who had been investigating rumors of ghosts in a small town. Agatha had been drawn to this town because of the reportedly odd behavior of the ghosts who seem to be moving into the town en masse.
Campbell and Williams have has worked together in the past and it shows. Campbell’s art is dark and moody, a perfect fit for Hellboy stories. He also dynamically shifts from close-up action to wider horizontal panels, adding movement and energy to his pencils. Lee Loughridge’s colors reinforce the tone of the book. His color choices for the ghosts give off an eerie, transparent quality and clearly differentiate them from the living characters. His use of light blues on the spectral mist communicates the eeriness of the setting and heightens the sense of danger and tension for the reader.
All in all, another fun start to a Hellboy tale. We seem to be getting great Mignolaverse content every month lately, and I can only hope Dark Horse keeps it up!
