After refusing Silas’ job offer, Vera reluctantly agrees to guide Robin and his elderly dragon, Chantrelle, to the dragon graveyard. All Robin wants to do is honor his father while trying to figure out what to do with the legacy he left him. As they set off, it soon becomes apparent that Jack, Vera’s former partner in crime, is after something Robin has. Whether it’s the dragon or something else entirely, it isn’t yet clear which sets up a nice mystery.
The trio of Vera, Robin, and Coy head out for the dragon graveyard only to deal with a frightened dragon, rain, muddy trails, and thunderstorms. There’s no doubt they will eventually have to face Jack, his crew, and possibly something even more dire.
This issue spends time building an organic comradery between not only Vera and Robin, but the two dragons. Their interactions are kind of cute. (The dragons, that is.) It’s clear Vera hasn’t decided what to make of Robin’s aspirations to be a writer quite yet but is warming to him a tiny bit. There is a brief flashback which seems redundant as we already know Vera stole Blaze. Those pages could have been used to dive deeper into her previous life and her relationship with Silas and Jack and how she ended up living with a band of criminals. I’m more curious about that than anything else. There are some great organic obstacles they have to face, not only in the natural world but with each other.
I’m definitely enjoying the art and coloring by Kay Woolhiser. She’s doing a fine job, and I’m seeing subtle improvements in her work. I look forward to the next issue.
