‘If You Find This, I’m Already Dead #1:’ Advance Comic Book Review

This comic raises an interesting question right off the bat: Does the fact that we’re reading it mean that the narrator/protagonist is, in fact, going to die by the end? As of this first issue, it’s unclear, but things certainly aren’t looking good for her.

Robin Reed is the first-ever reporter to be invited to a very dangerous military base. The base is on the other side of a portal to another planet, possibly in another universe. This other world, Terminus, is totally unlike our own, and everything and everyone in it is hostile to human beings. The human explorers don’t know much about the inhabitants of this new world, and they don’t know how to communicate with them. All they do know is that the native creatures want them dead, and only the toughest human beings have what it takes to survive on Terminus.

Unfortunately, after a brief introduction to the brave soldiers on base, things go south very quickly, and almost everyone is killed in an attack by the planet’s inhabitants. The military base, humanity’s only safe haven, is destroyed, and Reed is forced to find a way to survive on this deadly world. Fortunately, she’s more capable than most of the military personnel give her credit for. A seasoned war correspondent, if anyone has what it takes to survive behind enemy lines, it’s her. And while she may not speak the language, the alien civilization she’s navigating may not be so different from ours after all. Though in truth, that may make it more dangerous, rather than less.

This is a great start to what promises to be a wild and exciting comic. Writer Matt Kindt, who did Folklords and Subgenre, both of which I’m a great fan of, excels at creating unique, intricate worlds that you can’t help but get immersed in. I can’t wait to explore this one further.
