To anybody who loves comics – especially Marvel Comics, the origin of Spider-Man is a familiar one. Through multiple movies, cartoons, and comic adaptations, the story has been told often. In this reviewer’s opinion, the best version is the original by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko from 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15. It not only introduced a new superhero, but changed how an audience relates to comic book characters. Spider-Man has been, for over 50 years, the character that readers relate to the most.

Marvel Action: Origins #1 retells the introduction of Peter Parker’s Spider-Man, combining elements of the movies, cartoons, and comics. The story, written by Christopher Eliopoulos, doesn’t stray far from the Lee/Ditko classic. It updates the origin for a modern audience and adds elements such as Oscorp Corporation into the narrative. The art by Lanna Souvanny is cartoony, with fun body and facial expressions. The coloring is absolutely striking.

Also included in this issue is the origin of Thanos. Featuring Thor, The Avengers’ Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel, and Death herself, the story presents insight into the mad titan’s background. This tale provides a nice balance to the issue.

As first issues go, especially as an introduction to young readers, this is a pretty good one. With fun story and art, it’s a treat for anyone wanting to learn more about characters that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made famous. This is a comic worth picking up for anyone who is discovering the Marvel Comics characters for the first time.

Final Verdict: 3 out of 4 stars
