You mean we get two creator-owned books from James Tynion IV through BOOM! Studios this month? Why, yes, you do!

Why should that be exciting for you? Because every one of Tynion’s creator-owned series through BOOM! Studios is exceptional. I have not read one that isn’t full of life and vitality. Whether it’s the Cronenberg-esque satire of the sci-fi-horror apocalyptic worlds of his Memetic, Cognetic, and Eugenic, the sci-fi wonder of UFOlogy, the sheer joy of The Woods, or absolute bonkers terror and badassery of Something Is Killing the Children (currently running).

With Wynd, Tynion returns with the co-creator of The Woods, Michael Dialynas, to bring to life a fantasy adventure that should be good for most ages. We’re introduced to Wynd, a young man who is plagued by dreams that aren’t very fun. He turns into a large, feathered monster. It’s a wickedly fun transition that on the page reminds me of the classic shift to being a werewolf in An American Werewolf in London. It’s all in the details!

In real life, Wynd works at a restaurant that he lives above. He is happy with this life, but every day during his lunch break he sneaks out to watch his crush from a distance, the son of the royal gardener. Yes, as with most of Tynion’s books, he represents the LGBTQ+ community with rich and complex leading characters. There are few comic book creators that do this, and I love him for it.

This is also where the potential metaphor or social commentary comes into play, because Tynion’s series for BOOM! also are about something greater and deeper than just the wonderful stories and characters. Wynd is one of the few people who is still magical in this world. You know this by his pointed ears, and you know magical people are looked on as dangerous or “less than” almost immediately when he’s told to remember to cover his ears to hide who he is.

With the return of an ominous figure only referred to as The Bandaged Man, a sense of foreboding settles over the characters.

Let me just say: This is a beautiful series. The illustrations and the colors shine with vitality, alongside the amazing lettering and the incredible design work. This is genuinely a gorgeous issue to look at, from the inside cover to the final page.

If you want in at the beginning of what is already a winner from Tynion and Dialynas, then now’s the time. You won’t regret it!
