‘The Unicorn and the Fox #1:’ Comic Book Review

Buddy the unicorn lives in Glow, one of six magical realms throughout the galaxy, and the seat of power for them all. Looked down on by the other unicorns because of the little stump where his horn should be, Buddy longs to prove himself and be considered worthy.

Meanwhile, invading forces come to Glow led by a mysterious creature known as The Chancellor. He demands that the people bow before him or die. He also demands the source of power for the planet, without which they would also die. Or, Glow can fight against the Chancellor, but his armies are vastly superior, so, in doing so, Glow would surely die.

What can they do? Can Buddy the unicorn save Glow from destruction? Well, if you were to ask him, he’d likely say no. Fate, it seems, has other ideas, though, and Buddy may be the galaxy’s only hope.

There’s a lot going on in this comic. It’s not always the easiest to keep track of. It’s not that it’s convoluted or confusing. The story just moves very quickly and forces you to work to keep up. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

There’s a lot of potential in this story, and I look forward to seeing how things play out going forward; however, the real appeal here is the artwork. Artist Nick Acuna gives us a beautiful and intricately detailed fantasy world. In fact, we get six. At the very beginning, when we’re introduced to the six magical realms of the galaxy, each has its own distinct style, culture, and even (seemingly) time period. In this issue, the action takes place on Glow (the central world), but, hopefully, as things progress, we’ll get to explore some of the other realms in greater detail.

All in all, there’s a lot to like about this comic. If you’re into fantasy/adventure stories with intricate world building, you’ll want to check out The Unicorn and the Fox.
