In Our Encounters with Evil: Adventures of Professor J.T. Meinhardt and His Assistant Mr. Knox, we return to the world created by Mike Mignola and Warwick Johnson-Cadwell. For this new anthology of capers and hijinks, the eponymous duo is joined by Ms. Mary Van Sloan, vampire huntress and demon slayer extraordinaire.
The hardcover book consists of an introductory chapter, three anthology stories, and an epilogue. For the uninitiated (yours truly being one), previous knowledge of this team is unnecessary, so feel free to plunge right in for a wickedly good read. The introductory chapter quickly establishes the dynamic of the group while on a wild chase. This is followed by “The Lost Duke Kurtz,” which is, by far, my favorite story in this collection. It’s whimsical, dark, macabre, and with just the right hint of a gothic fairy tale. “Blackwater” takes enmity to a whole new level that is equally hilarious as it is gross. “Siegfried” is an ironic tale about the hunter becoming the hunted. The epilogue predictably ends on a cliffhanger of sorts, with both Mary and Knox coming upon what I presume to be their next adventure.
Mignola and Johnson-Cadwell’s anthology is a treasure trove of gothic tales that’s beautifully illustrated. It’s violent (in a PG way) and thrilling, and these are characters that would make a great animated series. (Remember the Jumanji animated series?!) If you’re a fan of Mike Mignola’s work, this is definitely for you!
