‘Firefly #10:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Quick recap from the last issue: The Second Unification War seems inevitable. It’s up the Mal, Moon, and the rest of the crew to keep things from blowing up. Well, blowing up more than usual, that is.

Where exactly are we now? Well, both sides are intensifying the war effort. Browncoats are taking over territories while Boss Singh has no qualms about massive explosions. There’s a gleaming moment of hope that things may get resolved without more blood spilt when a surprise appearance of someone from Mal’s past threatens to turn the sewer spigot on the proverbial fan.

This creative team really gels. Greg Pak’s script is punchy and gets the plot going while managing to keep some really nice personal moments in the mix. Pak’s excellent handle on the tone and voice of the series has been extolled ad nauseam by now, so let’s talk about his ability to somehow stretch his limited page count per issue to include a whole lot of plot. A lot of development happens on page and, at some point, I actually had to check to see if this was an expanded issue. Dan McDaid’s work has been solid throughout this run, and this issue is no exception. His panels capture a whole lot of dynamic action but never at the expense of the emotional impact. My only minute criticism is that he hasn’t quite nailed Simon’s stupidly handsome face, in that he’s only rather good-looking instead of, ya know, so-dumb-he-thinks-that-Kraft-singles-is-real-cheese stupidly handsome.  Joana Lafuente and Vincenzo Federici are new to this series, but their work is consistent with the excellent standards of the past, so really, it’s like nothing has really changed.

Overall, The Second Unification War may be upon us, but I don’t think anything is gonna shake things up more than the arrival of [redacted]. Things are gonna get unruly!
