In this new space adventure sequel to the Descender series by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen, we hit the ground running in the third issue. With the discovery of Andy’s former pet dog robot, Bandit, Mother’s goons are on their trail to capture the forbidden tech and the family; however, we learn that Mila is not too young to know how to kill, especially when her father is threatened.
This issue mirrors their desperate bid for escape with the backstory of Andy and his wife Eff fleeing for their lives when all that they knew and loved was destroyed. They find safe harbor on his old home of Dirishu-6, where they have a daughter Mila. Back on Sampson, Andy and Mila are on the run, but Mother’s goons are close—too close. Just like in the past, the future holds a deadly surprise for someone.
Excellent pacing and art are the highlights of this issue. I’m kind of gaga over the watercolors produced by Mr. Nguyen. It makes the whole world more aesthetically and visually interesting. I like to reread it a few times just to enjoy some of the subtleties. The story has also found its groove in this action-based issue. Not a moment is wasted, and we learn a lot about Andy and his family. Even Bandit has a bit of a character arc here. (I love it when the writer includes character arcs for the pets, whether they be animal, mineral, or robot.)
I definitely look forward to learning more about these characters and the world they live. Be sure to pick up the whole series to catch up.
