Fanbase Press Interviews Stunt Coordinator Eddie Perez (‘Deadpool’) on His Emmy Nomination for ‘Shameless’

The following is an interview with stunt coordinator Eddie Perez regarding his recent Emmy nomination for his stunt coordination work on the Showtime television series, Shameless. In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Perez about why the nomination is meaningful to him, his approach to starting new projects and working with the cast and crew, other entertainment mediums that interest him with regarding to stunt coordination, and more!

Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: Congratulations on your recent Emmy nomination for your work on Shameless!  How do you feel that this nomination has been most meaningful to you and to your work as a stunt coordinator?

Eddie Perez: The nomination itself is meaningful, because the stunt coordinator category nomination is by peer group only. So, I feel the most critical people are always your peers. To be nominated by them is a real honor. As far as my work as a stunt coordinator, it’s based on the script. I’m grateful I get to work on quality shows that allow me to put my interpretation of what is written to the screen. I pride myself on doing great work and working with the best people the stunt community has to offer.

BD: For those that may be unfamiliar with the process of stunt coordination, how do you approach each new project or episode, and which individuals do you find that you work most closely with in your preparation?

EP: For all projects, the conversation usually start with the director to get his vision. Television is unique in that you have a set tone on the shows style. So, we will usually have a meeting with our showrunner, First AD, and Unit Production Manager to see what fits the shows style in the time we have. On films we have more time and usually shoot previs for complicated action sequences. Although, TV is stepping up its game, and we do sometimes do it for TV. My job is to take the director’s vision and bring it to life.

BD: In addition to your work on Shameless, you have also worked on feature films including Deadpool and Sicario.  Do you feel that one medium is more challenging for which to provide coordination?

EP: The difference between films and TV is time. We do an episode in 7 days and a feature can be at least 3 months. They both have their own challenges. TV makes you be more creative with time management and features push your imaginary limits.

BD: Are there other mediums or genres of entertainment for which you would be interested in providing stunt coordination?  Likewise, are there any specific performers with whom you would be interested in working on future projects?

EP: I’ve been dabbling with VR. It’s still in its infancy, but it’s exciting because it’s a new medium.

I like working with creative people. I recently worked with Ilya Naishuller on Hardcore Henry. I was a small part of it and enjoyed being a part of something original. I also worked with Michel Gondry on commercials and films. He is also someone who has a different take on things, and I enjoy and appreciate that style of filmmaking.

BD: Are there any upcoming projects on which you are working that you are able to share with our readers?

EP: I’m happy to be back for Season 7 of Shameless. I recently worked on Fast 8 in Cuba. It was an amazing experience to shoot in Cuba, as well as work on my third Fast film.
