The following is an interview with writer Adam Rose (Playground: Attack of the Gurgle Bots) regarding the upcoming release of the collected Huge Detective trade paperback through Titan Comics. In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Rose about the added content that readers can anticipate from the collected edition, what made this such a standout series in his catalog of work, and more!

Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: Congratulations on the upcoming release of the collected Huge Detective trade paperback!  As with all of Titan’s releases, this trade is sure to be packed with incredible bonus features.  What will readers have in store with the upcoming release?

Adam Rose: Thanks! I really appreciate the opportunity to talk with you about Huge Detective! Titan has indeed added some fun goodies that include a character sketch by Magenta and a back-and-forth dialogue between the two of us.

BD: In looking back at the development and creation of the series, what can you share with us about your creative process in working with artist Magenta King that really made this series unique to your body of work?

AR: It has been such an honor working with Magenta. Almost immediately, we started Zoom meeting every other week to discuss how we could dig deeper into the lore of Huge Detective. We both really wanted this world to feel lived in with a rich history. Magenta and I get all of each other’s references and this shared knowledge enhanced the collaborative process. We shared our passion for all things comics… from Tokyo These Days to Blacksad and Criminal to Invincible.

BD: Likewise, how would you describe your creative process in crafting an engaging mystery? It’s always thrilling to follow a mystery story as the reader, but I would imagine that crafting the narrative and staying 3 steps ahead of your reader is quite the challenge!

AR: From the age of nine, I read all the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mysteries and then moved on to Agatha Christy, Raymond Chandler, and so many more. I butchered this quote recently, so I want to get it right this time… Chekhov once said, “If in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired. Otherwise, don’t put it there.” I try to take these words to heart and include little clues along the way that hopefully give the reader a big payoff in the end.

BD: What made Titan Comics the perfect home for this series?

AR: I really enjoy the various Titan series and when I saw that they have both hard-boiled detective comics and kaiju, I knew they were a great fit.

BD: Are there any other projects – past or current – that you would like to highlight for our readers?

AR: I am cooking up some new work but can’t talk about it just yet. I hope to share some news sooner than later!

BD: Lastly, what would you like to tell fans who want to learn more about the Huge Detective trade paperback?

AR: If you like a fantasy noir sandwich, then come take a big bite out of Huge Detective. In all seriousness, I hope people check out Huge Detective and see themselves in it, see a path towards finding common ground with others, and avoid being a ‘bean’ snack.
