The following is an interview with Gerald Cooper on the recent release of the comic book series, Genecy, with InVision Comics. In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Cooper about his shared creative process in bringing the story to life on the page, how he hopes that the story may connect with readers, and more!
Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: Congratulations on the release of Genecy! For our readers who may be unfamiliar with the story, how would you describe the series’ premise?
Gerald Cooper: Genecy is about a man who escapes from a subjugated galaxy. Once he’s free, he finds a power in the universe that’s been so hidden, beings who were thought to have been immortal have died of old age in their attempts to find it. Well, this power converts our guy into the super-powered Genecy, and he seeks to free his galaxy. Genecy’s problem is that he’s lost in space and finding his way home unfurls an entire universe to him. As his experiences develop his character, Genecy discovers there’s that there’s a lot more going on in the universe than what he originally thought.
BD: What can you tell us about your shared creative process in bringing these incredibly vibrant characters to life on the page?
GC: It’s an amazing experience to actually see what you’ve written, to see what your words look like through the symphony of professionals that you’re working with. When the artists send the pages to me, when the colorists add their dimension, when the letters get placed on the pages, and when you finally go to print, it’s like there’s all these ingredients that come together, whisking, swirling about . . . mixing together and making a final product that originated from your mind. The process can be long and quite intense, but you want everything to be spot-on. When it’s done right, when everything is in tune, then it’s an amazing experience that you’ll never forget. Never. You’ll always take it with you.
BD: At Fanbase Press, our #StoriesMatter initiative endeavors to highlight the impact that stories can have on audiences of various mediums. How do you feel that Genecy’s story may connect with and impact readers?
GC: One of my many hopes is for readers to find themselves somewhere in the stories. My grand desire to connect with others is a massive fire that keeps me writing. It keeps me going. It personalizes every story to me, and it offers a most exciting ride to anyone who gets on board.
BD: Are there any other projects – past or current – that you would like to highlight for our readers?
GC: I’ve got a lot of friends who’re publishing their own books. Friends like Brian Williams (Lucious Hammer and the Harlem Shadow of Soulhammer Comics) and Tony Kittrell (Darklight, Titan the Utra Man and Cosmos of Advent Comics) are producing a lot of fun stories and yes, I recommend them!
BD: Lastly, what is the best way for our readers to find more information about Genecy and your other work?
