Fanbase Press Interviews Tom Peyer on AHOY Comics’ 2024 Releases, Including ‘The Wrong Earth: Dead Ringers,’ the Return of the Toxic Avenger, and More

The following is an interview with Tom Peyer regarding the exciting releases for AHOY Comics in 2024. In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Peyer about his return to the world of The Wrong Earth for a new series, the return of the Toxic Avenger, and much more!

Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-ChiefOn the heels of AHOY Comics’ fifth anniversary, you have quite a few exciting releases in the works this year! First, you will be returning to the world of your fan-favorite series, The Wrong Earth, alongside Jamal Igle, Juan Castro, and Lee Loughridge for The Wrong Earth: Dead Ringers. Where will this story find our titular characters in their adventures?

Tom Peyer: Dragonfly, the modern, grim-and-gritty iteration of a classic masked crimefighter, finds himself trapped once more on campy Earth-Alpha, which might as well be ruled by the comics code. This time, he is oddly checked out, behaving as if crime doesn’t matter. What’s up? We try to pry the answer out of him, but you know Dragonfly. Not one for talking. This has some of the best art I’ve ever seen from Jamal Igle and Juan Castro, and that’s really saying something.

BD: As with all of AHOY Comics’ releases, Dead Ringers will contain incredible extra features. What can readers anticipate by way of stories and creators from this latest release?

TP: As always, we have some terrific short prose stories to round out the package. And an editor’s page that allows me to ramble and free-associate in search of a point to make, like a circus performer walking a frayed high wire. Will I fall? Every time!

BD: In addition to Dead Ringers, AHOY Comics will also provide a home for the comic book return of the Toxic Avenger. What can you tell us about this upcoming series from Matt Bors and Fred Harper?

TP: It has violent action, gross mutations, burning pustules, trenchant satire—all the things you love about Toxie! And the art is eye-popping, and I meant that figuratively, but it works literally. Fred somehow makes even the grossest stuff oddly appealing. Or maybe I’m just a messed-up person. No, it’s the art. Matt and Fred are the perfect team for this.

BD: Likewise, you will be putting an exciting spin on the sword-and-sorcery stories when reuniting Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows for the new series, Babs. What are you able to share about this series, and what makes AHOY the perfect home for this series?

TP: This one’s also quite satirical. Babs is a barbarian armed with her wits, courage, a talking sword, and a constantly frustrated appetite for riches. Her self-centered quest through the world of dragons and sorcerers is interrupted by the arrival of some awful people who will seem oddly familiar if you consume a lot of news. A lotta laughs, and the usual excellent storytelling from these two.

BD: Are there any other upcoming projects on which you are currently working that you would like to share with our readers?

TP: Deadweights launches in April; it’s a buddy comedy about two super-villain henchmen trying to leave the business. It’s by Tyrone Finch and Sebastian Piriz. And we have a new series of My Bad, the superhero comedy by Mark Russell, Bryce Ingman, and Peter Krause, coming up in May.

BD: Lastly, what is the best way for our readers to find more information about AHOY Comics and these exciting titles?

TP: You can find us on X, Bluesky, Facebook, and Instagram — but the best way to keep updated is to sign up for our free and funny-as-anything monthly newsletter.
