Fanboy Comics Interviews Domenick Dicce of ‘You’re a Vampire – That Sucks: A Survival Guide’

The following is an interview with writer Domenick Dicce regarding the release of his debut book, You’re a Vampire – That Sucks: A Survival Guide. In this interview, Fanboy Comics Managing Editor Barbra Dillon chats with Dicce about the inspiration for this devilishly delightful how-to book, why the book will make such a fantastically fiendish gift for the vampire in your life, and more!

Barbra Dillon, Fanboy Comics Managing Editor: Congratulations on the upcoming release of your new book, You’re a Vampire – That Sucks: A Survival Guide! What inspired you to take on the bold task of helping the undead survive, and what do you hope that readers will find most intriguing about the book?

Domenick Dicce: I wish that I had some benevolent reason for writing the survival guide, but it was born from my wife and I watching Beetlejuice. Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis have the Handbook forthe Recently Deceased to help them with their new life as ghosts. I thought that would be a fun book to actually write. From there, I spun off into a series of survival books for ghost, werewolves, witches, zombies, and vampires. The thing I hope readers find most intriguing is the real vampire history. This book is a comedic book, but I wanted people to also learn about the history of vampires from ancient lore to our modern films.

BD: You’re a Vampire is chock full of tips, tricks, and trade secrets about making it through each day of your eternal life. How would you describe your creative process in compiling this invaluable advice?

DD: I started out by doing general research into the history of vampires. It was important for me to know who these creatures were before mass media got a hold of them. When I had a firm understanding of the old beliefs, I started reading and watching as may vampire stories as I could. For the actual writing, I used my training as an actor to get in the head of my vampire and figure out his thought process in surviving the different obstacles that were presented to him.

BD: Are you able to share a few of the helpful tidbits provided within the book?

DD: I’ll leave the life or death tips for the readers who buy the book; however, there are plenty of useful tip that will help you enjoy your new undead lifestyle.

  • You can mix your favorite beverage with blood to enjoy a hint of that original taste from your living days once again. The ratio must be 90% blood and 10% liquid. Any more liquid than 10% and you will spew.
  • Moving is a hassle for the living and the undead. Places like Los Angeles (thanks to the plastic surgery craze) can be used as a place of residence longer than others.

BD: With Halloween fast approaching, this book would make the perfect gift for the ghouls on everyone’s Trick-or-Treat list. Is You’re a Vampire geared towards a specific age group, or would it be appropriate for all audiences?

DD: The book is geared towards an adult audience. Creating a survival guide for a species that survives off the blood of living creatures leads to a lot of mature situations. It also creates an interesting Google search history.

BD: Are there any other upcoming projects on which you are currently working that you would like to share with our readers?

DD: I am currently working on the werewolf sequel. Ideally, the series will have a new book every October, but there is a lot of research involved. It turns out condensing thousands of years of history and beliefs into a short comedic book is a lot of work.

BD: Lastly, what is the best way for our readers to find more information about You’re a Vampire and your other work?

DD: Since this is my first book and I have yet been deemed important enough to have a Wikipedia page, my personal website will be the best place to check out my other projects. You will also find links to my social media account, so you can see me stumble through the modern age.
