Fanbase Press’ Scariest 2023: ‘Talk to Me’

As Halloween is fast approaching, the Fanbase Press staff and contributors decided that there was no better way to celebrate this horrifically haunting holiday than by sharing our favorite scary stories! Be they movies, TV shows, video games, novels, or any other form of entertainment, members of the Fanbase Press crew will be sharing their “scariest” stories each day leading up to Halloween. We hope that you will enjoy this sneak peek into the terrors that frighten Fanbase Press!

Sometimes, a film comes around that really gets you, like creepy crawlies wiggling under your skin where you can’t quite reach them. It squirms around your brain, especially late at night when you’re all alone and feeling not so safe. A24 has put out some of the best modern horror movies of our time, and they did not disappoint with Talk to Me. It was just the film that 2023 — and horror fans everywhere— needed.

The Australian movie follows teenage Mia who lost her mom to an overdose two years earlier. She doesn’t seem to quite fit in with others but ends up at a party with her best friend and younger brother. This party, however, doesn’t go the way of most teenage soirees. One of the teens pulls out a strange-looking hand which has writing all over it. They are told a story of how it was cut off a psychic and that they can communicate with the dead through the hand. As they play the game, they become possessed. They take it to a new level of pure fun until things go horribly wrong.

Sitting in the theater surrounded by my two favorite horror movie-watching buddies, we literally jumped in our seats several times. There were many “What the F?!s” coming not just from the audience around us, but from our mouths, as well. It’s been so long since a movie has made me utter more than a gasp in the theater. As the teens laughed it up as each one became possessed, we grew increasingly more disturbed, knowing that they were playing with something they shouldn’t. With each possession, we drew closer to the edge of our seats, waiting for that one time that something really bad happened. We held our breath for so long that I thought we might pass out over the popcorn. And when the evil showed itself for the first time, we couldn’t believe what we were watching. The movie took viewers to a whole new level of on-screen hell, and it was beyond delightfully terrifying.

Talk to Me is one of those rare finds that lives up to the hype. It sticks with you long after the final credits, and we are still talking about the movie a couple of months after watching it. Every so often, a certain scene will slam back into my mind, and the goosebumps start all over again. My initial rewatch revealed so much more than the first viewing while keeping the scare factor sky high. The film will be one to revisit every year during the spooky season, and I personally cannot wait to experience it again and again.
