Project #1: Area 51: The Helix Project #1-5
What it’s about: Created and written by Trevor Fernandes-Lenkiewicz, with art by Brazilian artist Marcelo Salaza (A, issues 1-4) and Samuel Iwunze (A, issues 5 & 6), colors by Troféu HQ Mix award-winning Marcio Luis Freire, and letters by Taylor Esposito (Exorsisters, Finger Guns). This beautifully illustrated sci-fi tale brings an academic background in Molecular & Cellular Biology to this very personal story about finding strength, solace in self-identity, and reconciling it with memory, mental health, and loss.
The half-breed son of an extraterrestrial who masqueraded as human for decades witnesses his father’s death after saving a human child—a selfless act that resulted in the exposure of his father’s alien physiology. Tortured by the loss, the son, Kent, spends 15 years struggling to pick up the pieces until he’s mysteriously confronted by someone claiming to have been there on that fateful day and that they have a means of getting his dead father back. Driven to uncover the circumstances surrounding his father’s murder, and struggling to reconcile his dueling sense of identity, Kent is dropped into the jaws of a Cold War genetics conspiracy; what’s left of him is forced to confront a twisted ghost from his past as it plunges a dagger into everything he’s come to know about himself and what it means to be human.

Project #2: Don’t Forget to Breathe
What it’s about: A 200-page graphic novel about a trans girl in search of herself in the mystic island of Chiloé. Breathing is an automatic act of our body, but who has never experienced being so busy with something, mind and body tensing in achieving a goal or trapped by the anxiety of failing, that they forget to catch their breath? Don’t Forget to Breathe is a call to stop a moment and look around us, to exist in the here and now. We should cease for a few instants to think about what we have done and what we will do. Standing still in time and space, existing only for ourselves, to enjoy the moment, to look at what we have and not at what we lack.

Project #3: Genesis: Until the Stars Burn Cold
What it’s about: This story explores how trauma can make us remember our past differently, and incidentally we become someone else. This story explores the important role of love and forgiveness in emotional and mental health. I believe that stories are vital in helping folks, and this is my way of contributing. My hope is that this story touches people the same way stories have touched me in my darkest times — by providing inner strength and a new perspective on life.
