‘Team Genesis #1:’ Comic Book Review

“How often do you fly, Kari?”
“I don’t.  Outside of these random meetings, I lead a very ordinary life. I don’t need to fly.”
“It’s not about needing to fly.  It’s about being free, escaping this madness we live in.
“Once you go up, you just have to come back down and face it . . . Your best bet is to just ignore it.  That’s how I escape.”

Baltimore, MD – Present Day.  Gerald Petworth and Kari James have been given an assignment:  Infiltrate a Department of Homeland Security armored convoy to retrieve a young man being transported under guard to Quantico.  But, the young man apparently isn’t what he seems, and neither are Gerald and Kari, as their powers make them more formidable than the DHS Soldiers guarding the convoy. 

But, what they don’t know is the identity of the two other players sent in to retrieve their target, as well.

FarCorners Studios’ new book, Team Genesis, starts out calmly enough, as the two main characters, Kari and Gerald, head out to answer a call from Dr Grant.  It’s a simple enough thing to do, but after a leisurely start, the issue moves pretty quickly.  It’s an intriguing concept that superpowered beings work in the government, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out in future issues.   There’s some nice groundwork being layered here with the brief character intros, and writer Lincoln Farquharson will have some nice toys to play with, based on the admittedly limited character exposition given here.

Artist Art Gutierrez’s clean lines and color palette recall some of the works of illustrator Colleen Doran with a steady, confident computer brush stroke, and the layouts by Jun Joe Monares provide a nice energy to the story, even in the quiet moments. 

Verdict:        FOUR Power-Drenched Conspiracy Theories out of FIVE
