When I wrote my review of The Rook #3, I expressed mild disappointment that it wasn’t as action packed or filled with mind-bendingly paradoxical time travel awesomeness as the first issue was. At the same time, however, I also expressed my disappointment that the following issue would be the last and my hope that the saga would continue past the end of the current story arc.

Then, something kind of awesome happened. I got a comment on my review from Restin Dane, time-traveling protagonist of the Rook adventures. He assured me that the adventures were only just beginning, and that plenty more mind-bending time travel action was in store down the line. He even included a picture from the future (cover art for the first issue of the next arc)!

Yes, I admit, I’m far too easily impressed sometimes. I don’t care. I thought it was really cool.

Anyway, with that in mind . . . what of Issue #4? I’m proud to report that it’s full of mind-blowing action and mind-bending time travel goodness, pretty much from the first panel to the last. I don’t want to give too much away, but if you’ve read the previous issue, you know it involves a Morlock from the distant future getting loose in Victorian London. It also involves another famous writer-character pairing, besides the one that’s been prevalent in the previous issues, of H.G. Wells and his Time Traveler.

I wish I could say more than that. It’s so much better if I don’t, though. As the plot unfolds, the pieces begin to fall into place, and you realize what’s going on; your jaw will be on the floor. Or at least mine was.

If you’re a fan of time travel adventures, you should definitely read this comic. If you aren’t caught up, start from the beginning, of course. But then, once you’ve finished this issue, go back to Issue #1 and read it again. It drops a number of names and characters that become important later—but which are easy to miss in the middle of an action-packed story in progress. The first issue is definitely worth a second look and going back will help you understand a lot of things that weren’t clear the first time around. Nowhere near everything yet, but a lot of things.

In short, this is a great comic, and I highly recommend it. I want to delve further into this world, and I can’t wait for the next story arc to begin. Restin Dane assures me that it’s going to be pretty awesome.
