‘Star Wars #12:’ Advance Comic Book Review

In preparation for this issue, I pulled out all the previous ones and had a big, long marathon session. Having just watched A New Hope within the past few weeks, it made re-reading this entire series that much more enjoyable. Brian Wood has crafted a story that captures everything I love about Star Wars, and I can say that Issue #12 is no exception. After the action-heavy Issue #11 consisted mainly of dogfights, things slowed down a bit here and allowed time for more character development which, given the medium, I prefer. The more dialogue, the better.

Mon Motha and her nephew, Kell Bircher, had some ‘splainin’ to do after the events of the last issue, and some are more easily won over than others. Mainly Leia, of course, who continues to be the shining star of this series. I love strong, female characters, and Wood’s choice to put Leia front and center was one of my main draws to this series.

That, and well, the fact that it’s Star Wars. So, yeah . . .

We got a lot of cool character interactions this time, my favorite being a brief chat between Han and Leia that felt reminiscent of their banter on Echo Base (Oh wait, that hasn’t happened yet.) and also an all too quick one-on-one with Luke and the always reliable R2. But, the most exciting part is our time spent with Mr. Wedge Antilles. I won’t spoil it for y’all, but i think we all knew where it was going.

We didn’t see much of Vader this issue, but it seems that will be rectified in the upcoming two issues. Very exciting!

We are left with an exciting cliffhanger which we’ll have to wait a few months to see continued due to the Vader issues mentioned above. Luckily, it seems Brian Wood is contracted ’till at least Issue #20, which means we have more to look forward to from him. I’m sure most everybody is excited to see what else he has in store for us.
