‘Snowfall #5:’ Comic Book Review

We last saw the White Wizard track his daughter (and the formulary) to what remains of New York City. Kidnapping Anthony Farrow and taking him with him, the White Wizard runs into a gang called the “Down Boys” in the Bronx.  He negotiates a deal with them to find safe passage into the heavily protected and sealed off city (now called Saved New York City). Meanwhile, Chloe has escaped the clutches of Hazeltyne, and Inspector Deal must face the consequences of her failure to retrieve the formulary.

An issue that deals primarily with backstory, we see the beginning of the White Wizard’s reign of ecological terror begin in 2035, as he buries New York in icy snow, floods Los Angeles, and turns much of the United States into a drought-ridden wasteland. His goal is to rid the world of forces like Hazeltyne and the Cooperative in order to protect the earth. Unfortunately, much of humanity stands in his way, as well.  As the White Wizard continues his search for his daughter, Anthony Farrow and the “Down Boys” learn an awful and brutal truth about their association with him. Poor Inspector Deal, who is loyal to the Cooperative, finds herself on the receiving end of their cruel and sadistic ways; however, she may have an unlikely savior.

Once again, the story moves along at a nice pace, revealing information about the characters and the history of this dystopian world. I’m a huge fan of the lettering, as it sets the tone and keeps us on track with the myriad of complex characters and storyline. As I’ve mentioned in other reviews, there is always a hint of a fairy tale in the background mixed in with the hard science fiction. I find the fairy tale aspect adds a creepy feeling to the entire series which is a good thing. It’s a nice balance, and I like it.

I hope the team keeps up the good work, as I’m definitely enjoying the ride.
