‘Lantern City #7:’ Advance Comic Book Review

With news that Killian has found his wife in the clutches of Brother Pont, will Sander risk everything to save her? Or will the pull of his new life be too strong?

In this seventh issue of Lantern City, Sander grapples with the news that his wife Karla was taken to work in the foundry for Brother Pont.  Torn between his new duty and his old, Sander realizes that his priorities have been skewed living in the lap of luxury and his growing attachment to Terna and Jom.  He ventures into The Depths alone to rescue his wife, only to discover that she is not a slave of Pont’s but a very willing part of the rebellion.  Her behavior shocks him, and he flees back to Gray Towers.  Now, Sander pins his hopes on Killian and his belief that the city’s leader can change Lantern City for the better. But, that belief is crushed when Killian reveals a secret he’s been keeping from everyone.  Who will Sander turn to now?

Once again, the art pretty much rocks, and I especially love the detail in Killian’s secret lab. The colors also do a great job of highlighting the different classes and the way each lives. My main concern is that Sander comes off as a bit of a jerk. First, he pretty much abandons his wife and child, and now he doesn’t really give a second thought to leaving Terna and Jom or what will happen to them if he disappears. Granted, they are not his wife and child, but we, as readers, have spent more time with them and their characters which are much more developed than Karla’s.  It’s a tricky balance that I hope the writers pay close attention to.  I am glad that we’ve finally gotten to the “Big Reveal,” and it will be interesting to see how Sander deals with this new information in later issues.

This has been a totally fun ride, and I look forward to reading the next issue.
