‘Sweethearts of the Galaxy: Episode 6 – Hanging Out in Bars with Boys’ Review

Holy whiskey shots, Batman! After watching Katelyn (Kit Quinn) nearly beat a robber to death because she thinks she’s a superhero, her roommate Lilly (Lola Binkerd) has had enough and retreats to the comforts of a bar to step away from the craziness. Who can blame her? I think I’d have resorted to drinking earlier than this. While there, Lilly and Katelyn meet a persistent gentleman who is undeterred by ladies in superhero costumes in his quest for companionship and a bartender who isn’t afraid to go the distance to protect her customers.

Binkerd put on an amazing performance this episode in playing off smoosing guys, threats of violence, and the usual Trinity Infinity antics when all Lilly wants to do is quietly get drunk somewhere. Being the most “normal” character in the series is a heavy burden, especially as Katelyn drags Lilly further into the rabbit hole each week, but Binkerd plays the part with plenty of sass and heart.

I was less crazy about the new characters introduced this week. While the Bartender (played by Amielynn Abellera) and the Barfly (played by Jaemyong Lee) are well portrayed and have great banter between them with the same brilliant commentary on cliches I’ve come to expect from Sweethearts of the Galaxy, the cheesy bar hookup scenario didn’t feel comic booky to me, and the whole scenario escalated in some rather extreme ways that left me confused.

For me, what makes the episode is the heart-to-heart between Lilly and Katelyn as each of them tries to convince the other of their view of the world. This scene is well written, touching, and shows real strength on Lilly’s part to dive back into the sea of madness for her friend.

You can watch Sweethearts of the Galaxy Episode 6 here, and, if you’re not already, now is a great time to get caught up, because Episode 7 brings back Megan Alyse as Morgan and Tallest Silver as Silvia in what looks like it’s going to be one of the quirkiest, funniest, and most superhero antics-filled episodes yet.
