‘Back to the Future #2:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Well, “Back to the Future Day” may have come and gone, and no, we don’t have flying hoverboards yet, but we did get a 4-part Back to the Future comic book series from IDW Publishing that will continue well into the future! 2016 to be exact. And, with Issue #2 just being released, these “untold tales and alternate timelines” are just getting started.

Last month, we learned all about how Marty first met Doctor Emmett Brown, a question that’s always been on my mind even though some might argue that they first met in 1955 when the DeLorean first sends Marty back in time in the original movie. We also got a brief look into Doc’s early days as a scientist, including his work on The Manhattan Project.

This month, however, we learn exactly why Doc Brown burned his house down in “The Doc Who Never Was.” To me, the reason was somewhat surprising, but our favorite doctor’s character always remains as constant as his own experiments. The second half of Back to the Future #2 is called “Science Project,” in which Doc helps Marty discover an overdue class project. Needless to say, although we get to see some of Doc Brown’s early experiments, his 88-mile-per-hour time-traveling Delorean will always be his best work.

As always, I must give credit where credit is due, and, in this case, that goes to writers Bob Gale, John Barber, and Erik Burnham. In this month’s issue, I truly appreciated the detail that went into the character development. Although these are new stories in the Back to the Future universe, the personalities of Marty and Doc Brown have remained the same. Add that along with artwork by Marcelo Ferreira and Chris Madden, and you truly have one of my favorite new comic book series in the industry right now. Kudos to all involved!

In the meantime, I look forward to next month and the other stories our favorite Doc will share with his children, Jules and Vern.

Until next time,
#ToBeContinued . . .
