War. What is it good for? Well, maybe something . . .

Of course, I’m not talking about actual war. I’m talking about Michael Moreci’s six-part Dawn of the Planet of the Apes comic book series.

If we can recall from last month, Malcolm and Rita came up with a plan to try and get their son back, but that involved sneaking onto a moving ship, not necessarily the easiest thing to do. And, while Pope is building his own army of apes to rise against Ceasar, Koba tries to convince him to back down. If he doesn’t, “ape not hurt ape” could become a thing of the past . . .

In Dawn of the Plane of the Apes #5, Malcolm and Rita do whatever it takes to get their son back–which they do! Proving my opening quote that war can be good for something . . . sometimes. But, not everyone is able to make it off the ship to safety, and since this storyline leaves Koba just as he is about to attack Pope, we may soon realize that war is, in fact, good for absolutely nothing!

As always, I must commend Michael Moreci for this beautifully written series. Metaphors and motifs are strong with Moreci, and I really appreciate the effort he has taken to show the true “value” of guns and fighting in our society. And, of course, Dan McCaid’s artwork only solidifies those analogies, particularly between the ape and human storylines, which visually are almost one and the same in this series. In this particular issue, I must also give a shout-out to cover and variant cover artists Christopher Mitten and Koba Graffiti, respectively. Their artwork has also made an astounding connection between our friends, both ape and human alike.

I am sad to say that this is almost the end. The entire six-part series came and went for me. How did it feel for you? Moreci has really made me think about many of the wrongdoings in today’s society, and what I can do to help. For now, if Malcolm and Rita have taught me anything, it’s to keep our family and friends close, before it’s too late . . .

Until next month,
#BeKindToOneAnother!
