‘Conan Red Sonja #2:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Gail Simone (Secret Six, Batgirl) and Jim Zub (Wayward, Samurai Jack, Munchkin) keep up the pace with the second issue of Conan Red Sonja. This time, along with Conan and Red Sonja, we have pirates(!) and you get the sense that Simone and Zub are in for the fun of it. Picking up a few years after their first run in with each other, the duo are up against those strange, red vines that ended our previous issue.

The thing I enjoy about this book is the attitude. Both Red Sonja and Conan are so clearly drawn as characters. Sonja is a bit of a hard ass, willing to do the right thing no matter what, and Conan is charismatic and flippant. And yet, it makes perfect sense that they would get along with each other. There isn’t one sentence that I don’t believe when uttered between them, or when uttered at all. Heroic lines are tossed around, and I didn’t roll an eye.

Along with them is Conan’s lover, a black-haired pirate, and Sonja’s partner, an ex-slave along with her – also a female character. It’s refreshing to see so many female characters in a book.

Dan Panosian’s (Astonishing X-Men, Spawn, and any more) art is playful and dynamic in capturing each character’s personality with precision. This is a perfect team of creators for a book like this, because it’s simply a lot of fun, and they get that. If you grew up watching Conan, Beastmaster, or Krull, you’ll dig this book. Our world needs more well-told fantasy adventures.
