Justified S4E9That. Was. Awesome.

In the past two weeks on Justified, we’ve had the reveal of the season-long mystery of Drew Thompson’s identity and last week’s moving of the plot’s chessboard setting up the remaining three episodes.  The table was set for all kinds of shenanigans to go down in Harland County.  Last night’s edition didn’t disappoint.

With the Marshalls pinned down with Drew in Harlan and Boyd and Theo’s men coming to kill him, a clever escape needed to be hatched, and, of course, it was.  The cool thing about last night’s episode was it gave nearly everybody else all the action hero stuff to do while Raylan was basically inert, hiding out with Drew and Rachel in the old, abandoned high school while everybody else did the heavy lifting.

Tim and Art were pinned down by snipers and had to stage a clever escape via Molotov Cocktail, and, best of all, Patton Oswalt’s Constable Bob got to demonstrate some genuine bada–ery during his violent and harrowing encounter with one of Theo’s goons.  Stay frosty, Bob. Stay frosty.

In between all the action and super cool hero posing, brilliant Elmore Leonard dialogue came flying off the tongues of actors who are expert in delivering it.  This episode sounded great.  I loved Theo’s hired guns commenting on how verbose all these characters are.  Ava hasn’t had much to do this season, so it was great to see here get such a powerful scene with Constantine.  I’ve only seen Mike O’Malley do comedy, so I had no idea he could do menacing this well.

That was easily the best episode of the season, and we still have two more to go.  Justified is heading into the home stretch at a full gallop, and poor Ellen May is still holed up with Limehouse.  Can’t wait to see how it all ends.
