When it comes to the infectious xenomorphs and the trophy-gathering yautja, Judge Dredd of Mega-City One has faced both alien species before in separate encounters, but in Dark Horse Comics’ upcoming Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens miniseries by Eisner Award–winning writer John Layman (Chew) and artist Chris Mooneyham (Predator: Fire and Stone), Dredd must fight a two-front war against two of the most deadliest species in the galaxy! If the first issue is a sign of things to come, readers are in for a blood-soaked, acid-drenched, bone-crunching, balls-to-the-wall brawl between the nastiest bad asses around!
MINOR SPOILERS BELOW
Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens #1 opens with a reversal of fortune featuring a predator on the opposite end of the hunt. With the desperate extra-terrestrial hunter pursued by hootin’-and-hollering genetic mutants that seem to have run off the pages of The Island of Doctor Moreau, Layman and Mooneyham open the book with a pulse-pounding, over-the-top, and weird-as-@#$% tone that doesn’t disappear to the final page of the first issue. Dredd, as always, operates as a larger-than-life figure, perfect for the comic book medium, and with a plot containing a mad scientist, a captive predator, the potential splicing of xenomorph genes, a character named Archbishop Emoji, and a yautja rescue squad, this series is off to a fantastically super-charged and absolutely bizarre start. Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens seems like it’s going to be a roller coaster ride of a comic book series, so my recommendation is to just sit back and enjoy the trip, my friends!
If Mooneyham’s previous work in the Aliens and Predator universes wasn’t enough of a “credentials check,” his exciting and epic artwork in Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens easily demonstrates what an excellent choice he was for the series. Every page seems to vibrate with an intense inner energy present throughout both the script and the artwork. In addition, the impressive coloring skills of Michael Ayiyeh really end up bringing Mooneyham’s visuals to life on the page, and, together, they make a truly excellent team. The series will also feature covers by Eisner Award winner Glenn Fabry (Preacher), with the first issue featuring a contribution as impressive as it is iconic.
FINAL VERDICT: Without spoiling too much of the story, at the end of this first issue, the stage is set for the ultimate rumble, and it doesn’t matter if it’s the xenomorphs, the predators, or Dredd himself that’s bringing you to the fight. This is one tussle you’re not going to want to miss. Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens is rocking with the fun and furiousness of an ’80s action flick like Total Recall or The Running Man, so if you’re looking for an uber-fun, ultra-violent rampage this summer, this is the comic book for you!

That’s all for now, my fellow comic book sniffers.
