The S-squad returns in WarZone Girls Volume 1, Issue 2: Only the Strong Survive, and creators Thomas Nyman (writer) and Marat Mychaels (pencils) ramp up the stakes with their second issue, delivering a stronger, more exciting, and more violent issue than last time!
In WarZone Girls Volume 1, Issue 2: Only the Strong Survive, Nyman continues his tale of the S-Squad’s struggle against the world government during a state of apocalyptic, never-ending war. This issue focuses specifically on the character of Wolf, revealing her tragic background and recruitment to S-Squad, while also revealing more about WarZone Girls’ villains and their surprising abilities.
Nyman’s script is tighter and more exciting than last time, and this makes for a more enjoyable reading experience. In my review of WarZone Girls’ premiere issue, I stated that one of my hopes for the following issues was a deeper exploration of the individual members of S-Squad, and Nyman begins that exploration in this issue. Nyman also delivers some kickin’ action sequences and some delicious exploration and backstory on the nanobots, the world government, and their nefarious plans.
Mychaels also comes to the table with guns blazing for this latest issue. The art is crisp and clear, the characters are emotive, and the tech is sweet and sci-fi looking. Anthony George’s colors are also impressive and add a lot to the visuals of the issue.
FINAL SCORE: 3.5 Deadly Female Assassins out of 5
WarZone Girls Volume 1, Issue 2: Only the Strong Survive is definitely worth a read, and you’ll want to keep an eye on the series to see if it continues to advance beyond the predictable norms present in the comic book industry. In addition to being able to read the entire second issue of WarZone Girls for free, the official website offers a ton of extra content and bonuses, including WarZone Secure, a service that seems to be designed to provide a “no-cheating” online competitive matchmaking environment for many popular first-person shooter video games, like Call of Duty.
That’s all for now, comic book sniffers! Walk off those bullets wounds and keep reading!
