Geeks Care: How You Can Help The Movember Foundation and Blastoff Comics

When Fanboy Comics is not providing you with the latest in geek news and entertainment, the FBC staff hopes to offer our readers a myriad of opportunities to give back to the community. We love reading comics, watching movies, and playing video games, but we are never happier than when we are able to help others in need. With Geeks Care: How You Can Help, FBC will provide you a variety of causes that would greatly appreciate your time.

Happy New Year, Fanboy Comics readers!  As 2015 is already off and running, the FBC staff is eager to bring you its weekly listing of amazing and worthwhile organizations and events that offer opportunities to give back to your community.  In the first Geeks Care: How You Can Help installment of the year, we once again shine a spotlight on the fine folks at Blastoff Comics, a top-of-the-line comic book shop in North Hollywood, CA. Blastoff stocks both current comics and graphic novels, as well as an astonishing collection of vintage comics for sale, providing customers with rarities that they just cannot find anywhere else. What truly makes Blastoff and its owners, Jud Meyers and Scott Tipton, stand out is their commitment to helping others in need. A portion of all of their proceeds are donated to charity, with the recipients changing on a monthly basis. This month, Meyers and Tipton have chosen to highlight The Movember Foundation, and we want to join Blastoff Comics in educating our readers about this important organization.

The Movember Foundation is the leading global organization committed to changing the face of men’s health.  The Movember community has raised $559 million to date and funded over 800 programs in 21 countries. This work is saving and improving the lives of men affected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health problems.  The Movember Foundation challenges men (Mo Bros) to grow moustaches during Movember (formerly known as November), to spark conversation, and raise vital funds for its men’s health programs. To date, 4 million moustaches have been grown worldwide, but they won’t stop growing as long as serious men’s health issues exist.

Movember’s not just for fanboys. Fangirls who support men’s health, known as Mo Sistas, are an important part of Movember’s success. Mo Sistas register, start a team, and fundraise – they do everything Mo Bros do, they just don’t grow a Mo. Mo Sistas are champions of Movember, rallying the men in their lives to join the movement, grow moustaches, and have important conversations about men’s health.

Since Movember has passed, the next part of the Movember journey is for the foundation to put the fundraising dollars to work.  The team works closely with each of its men’s health partners to ensure all funds go towards world-class programs in line with their long-term strategic goals.

For those interested in lending financial support (which is welcome throughout the year – not just in Movember) to The Movember Foundation, readers may visit the Donation page on their official website.   Be sure to scan through the rest of the website, as well, in the event that you want to form your own Movember team next Movember!

In addition, please remember that Blastoff Comics will donate a portion of their proceeds to this worthwhile organization this month. If you have the opportunity, I would encourage you to stop by Blastoff, meet the incredibly personable store owners, and assist in helping both The Movember Foundation and local business owners by picking up a few comics. As the Blastoff website says, “Comics can make saving the world look easy.” By shopping at Blastoff, it has never been easier to save the world (and others!), one comic book at a time.

If you have a volunteer opportunity or an important cause that could use the assistance of a few geeks, please email the details to barbra (at)
