The Kickstarter Report: ‘Flesh of White’

Flesh of WhiteMore often than not, Kickstarter campaigns for independent comic books take time to build steam before reaching their crowdfunding goal.  While some campaigns seem to capture magic in a bottle, reaching their fundraising goal (and beyond!) in a matter of mere days, this occurrence remains a rarity.  For this reason, the Fanboy Comics staff was intrigued and impressed by the upcoming comic book series Flesh of White, published by indie publisher Inverse Press.  With just over a week remaining in their Kickstarter campaign, the creators behind Flesh of White have already surpassed their goal, but they need your help to reach their exciting, new stretch goals!

Written by Erica J. Heflin (Mother and Son, Of Wolf and Woman) and featuring art by Amanda Rachels (ClownTown, The Book), Flesh of White is a four-issue series that tells the story of an infant in Tanzania who was born with albinism.  While albinism brings with it a host of medical concerns, witch doctors in Tanzania view those with albinism (referred to as “Ghosts”) as magical.  When the infant is chosen as a witch doctor’s next victim, his parents must struggle to keep their child alive.

While Flesh of White is a supernatural horror story that highlights the bond between parent and child, it also brings to light the real-life events and practices that are still taking place in areas of Tanzania and Kenya.  Children and adults with albinism are often mutilated and murdered, so that they may be used in spells by those who practice witchcraft.  By sharing this story with readers, the comic series’ creators hope to bring greater awareness to this problem with the hopes that it ends such violence.

If successfully funded through Kickstarter, Inverse Press will be able to produce and print the first issue of Flesh of White.  To learn more about the story behind Flesh of White and to see a preview of the amazing artwork in store for the project, be sure to check out the below video.
