SDCC Exclusive
The Fanbase Press team recently announced their 2022 SDCC exclusive: a limited edition copy of Ripple Effects #1 to celebrate the new graphic medicine series! Ripple Effects is a five-issue comic book series which explores life as a superhero with an invisible disability and features an “Unseen Ripples” essay series written by individuals with invisible disabilities who relate Ripple Effects‘ events to their own lived experience. Series creator/writer/colorist Jordan Hart and cover artist Justin C. Harder (CLAUS Studios) will be on hand at the Fanbase Press booth (Table O-03) throughout the week to sign copies of the SDCC exclusive!

Fanbase Press and its staff and creators will be hosting a number of thought-provoking panels throughout the week. Below is the schedule of panels throughout the week of SDCC:
THURSDAY
1:00 p.m.: Comics Catalog Curation for Adults — Led by Barbra Dillon (editor-in-chief, Fanbase Press), this panel – including Matthew Noe (librarian, Harvard Medical School), Moni Barrette (director of Collection Development & Publisher Relations, Library Pass), Jordan Hart (writer, Ripple Effects), and Jameson Rohrer (judge, 2022 Eisner Awards) – will feature librarians, comics distributors, and comics creators discussing what they consider when curating a comics catalog for adult readers. Topics to be discussed will include avenues for finding both mainstream and independent titles, how to curate and inclusive catalog in terms of creators, characters, and stories, how to navigate challenging themes and content, and more. 2:00 p.m.: Forging New Pathways for Comics in Academia — More than ever before, comic books are making their way into classrooms at all educational levels, providing opportunities for readers and educators alike to analyze, learn from, and inspire through sequential art. Led by Barbra Dillon (editor-in-chief, Fanbase Press), this panel – including Dr. Theresa Rojas (founding director, The Latinx Comic Arts Festival), Amber Padilla (artist, The Secret Garden on 81st Street), and Katlin Marisol Sweeney-Romero (PhD candidate in English, The Ohio State University) – will discuss the various applications of print and digital comics from an academic perspective and the new pathways that are being forged across mediums in the 21st century. 5:00 p.m.: The State of Comics Journalism: Newsletters and TikTok and Blogs, Oh My! – The world of writing about comics is changing yet again, with new ventures appearing, old formats arising again, and all new ones finding innovative ways to talk about comics, from Substack to TikTok and back. Heidi MacDonald (The Beat) joins Chris Arrant (PopVerse), Graeme McMillan (Comics, FYI), Joelle Monique (IHeartRadio), Barbra Dillon (Fanbase Press), and others for their annual discussion of the state of comics journalism. 11:00 a.m.: The New Face of Jewish Comics – The portrayal of Jews in comics and Jewish people making comics has grown and changed immensely from titles involving Nazis or neurotic New Yorker stereotypes. - Writers/artists Matt and John Yuan will be at booth 2001 with 1First Comics! They will have some metal covers (Love Town #1, Inspector Oh #1, and Serving Supes #1), as well as a limited print run of the brand new standalone story – Love Town Special #1.
- Publisher Wannabe Press and writer Russell Nohelty will be at table K-03 with artist Kelsi Jo Silva.
- Creator Nicholas Doan and Monster Elementary will be in Small Press at table Q-05!
- Writer Madeleine Holly-Rosing and the Boston Metaphysical Society Comic will be back at SDCC in Small Press L-03. Come check out their graphic novels, and their first-ever audio drama, The Ghost Ship, will be available on a CD!
