Swamp Thing #6

The epic return of Alec Holland to the DC universe continues. Last issue, we saw Alec call on the Swamp Thing and unleash its power. This week the Rot responds, and neither Alec nor Abigail will ever be the same again. This is a great slow burn series, and even though some people are disappointed that Swamp Thing rarely makes his presence known in his own book, it will just make it all the sweeter when he finally shows up to destroy the Rot. The only gripe with this issue is that the beautiful artwork of the regular series’ artist, Yanick Paquette, has been replaced by reasonable substitute Marco Rudy. No offense to Marco’s art, which is strong in this issue, but Yanick has really made this book his own.

The fun continues as Reed Gunther and crew explore dangerous new territory: female identity. That’s right, this month the Houghton brothers focus on Starla, the rough, tough, and rancher’s daughter. What will happen to our crew when Starla realizes she might not want to be strong arm of the group and instead wants to be a pretty lady? Another great adventure, with zombies, arm wrestling, and of course pickled beets!
Winter Soldier #1

Bucky, the sidekick that won’t stay dead, is back in this dark, intense spy-thriller. This is the kind of story that Ed Brubaker always wanted Captain America to be. James Buchanan Barnes (aka Bucky) is a man haunted by his past actions as the Soviet assassin Winter Solider and is trying desperately to clean up a mess that he can’t help but feel responsible for. It seems that Bucky wasn’t the only KGB sleeper agent, and the others have been sold on the black market to the highest bidder. Artist Butch Guice and colorist Bette Breitweiser are really let loose in this book, creating a moody world for these dangerous spies to inhabit. If you like intrigue, espionage, and gritty violence, then Winter Solider is the perfect book for you.
