Image Comics’ The Moon Is Following Us is about parents Samantha and Duncan trying to save their daughter Penny.

The story picks up in a strange place; it seems as if we may have skipped a few chapters. Samantha and Duncan are escorted to a castle by Brio, a cigarette-smoking frog wearing a crown and an eye patch who is also sporting a sniper rifle. While argue about the best way to get into said castle, they meet Pigface, an arms dealer bat who hides his wares under his giant wings and sells them in exchange for plasma. Duncan wants to sneak in, but Sam wants to go in and take out some guards. They agree to sneak in after fighting with the screeching skeleton phantoms that patrol the castle.

It should be no surprise that Daniel Warren Johnson and Riley Rossmo have created this bonkers fantasy world. Given the creators’ resumes, this looks to be the start of a wild ride. The story’s starting point is a unique choice, and it’s not the media en res aspect just where the scene picks up. They only repeat their mantra, “Anything to get to Penny.”

Johnson and Rossmo’s world is a stew of influences, and we’ve barely scratched the surface. Mike Spicer’s colors do a lot to enhance the atmosphere that Sam and Duncan are trying to survive. The art looks great in this insane world where anything is possible.

Wait until you find out what the stakes are in the last few pages. A lot of questions are still up in the air at the end of this issue, but it’s intriguing enough to keep going.
