Matt Kindt’s excellent series, Mind MGMT, feels like it is approaching the final showdown between Mind MGMT and Meru’s group of rebels. The last issue brought Meru’s quest to the secret hideaway of Sir Francis, the unkillable first immortal. (Redundant, I know.) Unfortunately, they have conflicting goals. She wants him to train her and teach her about the origins of Mind Management. He has survived more than is imaginable and wants her to kill him. I don’t think it counts as a spoiler to say that we get to see a fascinating history lesson.

Sir Francis’s story shows Mind Management growing from a few idealistic people trying to make the world a better place for humanity to a massive and sprawling organization with no regard for human life. Along the way we get to see Mind Management’s hand in several historical events, but not necessarily the ones you think. This issue does such a great job of showing how a small group of powerful men with incredible power and good intentions can quietly be corrupted into something dark and dangerous.

The writing and art in this issue meet the impossibly high standards set by the rest of the series. Kindt keeps finding surprising, new places to take the story. His art is some of – if not the – most stylized in comics today. Even when two characters are talking for several pages, the art is still exciting. When zeppelins are exploding, it is incredible.

This issue will probably wind up being one of the ones that stands out when I go back to reread the series in a year or two. It feels like this is a big turning point for Meru. She is closer than ever to being ready. I have no idea what is coming next. I can’t wait to find out.
