‘TMNT Ongoing #69:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Wait a minute?  Didn’t I just write about these guys?  There’s been so much love going around for our favorite heroes of New York City that it’s been hard to keep up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles these days.

Even my roommates are on a recent TMNT hype after I “forced” them to watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (I used my birthday as an excuse…), but they loved it as much as I knew they would.  The storylines for Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang made up for the monstrosity that was its predecessor.

Thank goodness we have IDW Publishing’s ongoing series to keep us occupied every month.  If we recall from TMNT #68, Agent Bishop and the Earth Protection Force (EPF) are on a rampage against mutants, and he’s using one of their own mutanimals—Slash—to seek and destroy anyone of his own “kind.”  Meanwhile, Master Splinter has his own Footclan to lead with much different intentions than that of our four heroes.  Heroes who are next on Bishop’s list of mutants to find…and kill…

Which brings us to this month with TMNT #69.  The Turtles are surrounded by the EPF, but leave it to Hob to have a chaotic plan up his sleeve.  Meanwhile, Mondo Gecko has a plan of his own to save his friends, and we delve further into Agent Bishop’s life after he makes an unscheduled visit to his frail father.

Leave it to legendary wizards Kevin Eastman, Bobby Curnow, and Tom Waltz to keep this storyline alive and well for so long.  Sixty-nine issues and multiple mini-series, movies, and more is a lot to keep track of in 5+ years without going stale.  And that’s just the contemporary stuff!  But when you have an amazing team that includes artwork by Mateus Santolouco and colors by Ronda Pattison, you can trust these two artists with anything you throw at them.  Even surprise twists that we’ve become so familiar with in these heroes-in-a-half-shell adventures.  What’s not to love?

Now, I wonder what Hob has up his sleeve with—oops—I’ve said too much already…

Until next month,
#TurtlePower
